Just got tipped to a pretty cool contest being put on by Apple and American Idol. They're offering the opportunity to submit your original MP3 to their jointly supported songwriting contest. The winner will have their song performed live on American Idol and distributed through iTunes.

Plus, Apple is sponsoring free workshops covering music-making basics and songwriting tips from the pros with an opportunity to explore GarageBand hands-on.
