Meme too, meme too!

Ok Annie, I'm in. As another lover of lists and movies... I have to play. As you said, I can't resist. Also, I was stunned at some of the similarities between our movie experiences, and surprised by some of the differences!

1. Name a movie that you have seen more than 10 times.
My list is also too long for me to be exhaustive in my answer but...

Raiders of the Lost Ark (and its prequel & sequel)
Amadeus (orig version 10+ and the director's cut about 4)
The Breakfast Club
Raising Arizona
The Wizard of Oz
Original Star Wars trilogy
Twin Peaks (the seasons and the feature)
Dead Poets Society
The Shining
The Hudsucker Proxy
Big Lebowski
Blade Runner
Amélie
Annie Hall
12 Monkeys
Big Night
The Secret of NIMH
the list, she doth go on, but not here :)

2. Name a movie that you've seen multiple times in the theater.

Star Wars, Empire, Jedi, Amélie, Blade Runner, Amadeus, The Wall, Contact, Fight Club, The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, The Illusionist

3. Name an actor that would make you more inclined to see a movie.

Maggie Gyllenhaal, Audrey Tautou, Ian Holm, Stanley Tucci, Meryl (but to be honest I usually go see movies much more based on who the director is, rather than the cast.)

4. Name an actor that would make you less likely to see a movie.

Andie McDowell, Melanie Griffith, more than half of the Baldwins

5. Name a movie that you can and do quote from.

@Annie: [Annie and hubby] quote from it often: "I know, but honey!"

My wife and I SO often quote not only that line (which we do again and again till we get tears in our eyes) but many many other Coen lines from The Big Lebowski, Hudsucker Proxy as well as Raising Arizona. We also love to quote Big Night and lots of our favorite TV shows.

Some Examples would be

Raising Arizona:
My wife: T, grab my jacket while you're in there
Me: which one? what's it look like
My Wife: you know it's got Yoda's and shit on it

Big Night:
My wife: how's the pesto?
Me: It's sooo good I have to KEEEEL myself
My wife: Take a big bite out of the ass of Pesto. Rawr!

Big Lebowski (free to use anytime there is a funny duh moment of some kind)
Me: Honey, you want to click that button to start the download
My Wife: Hmm?
Me: Up there, the red one.
My Wife:
Me: Right there
My Wife: Oh you mean coitus?

Hudsucker: (again, a sufficient answer to just about anything)
Me: What's that for?
My Wife: You know, for kids.

6. Name a movie musical that you know all of the lyrics to all of the songs.

The King and I, The Music Man... I was in these shows in high school. King of Siam and Harold Hill respectively. The thing that blows my mind is that about 5 years ago... "You got Trouble, right here I say, Trouble right here in river city" came into my head... and I started sorta reciting/singing it in my head and at about the 5th line I hit a wall... and I couldn't remember another word, and now I can't remember it. It's gone. I'm googling thy lyrics to that when I'm done with the meme.

7. Name a movie that you have been known to sing along with.

Wizard of Oz, like a freak. (I do a mean Judy Garland "rainbow")
Oh, and Annie.... I also sing along to that damn Battlestar Galactica song... I have my own harmony part and everything... what a geek.

8. Name a movie that you would recommend everyone see.

I have three. Three movies that a lot of people either havent seen, are afraid to see, or don't think they'd like. I LOVE these films and think that everyone who loves movies should watch these:
Amélie
Fight Club
Annie Hall

9. Name a movie that you own.

Probably have about 150 on the DVD shelf. 95% of them are movies that I would give at least 4 out of 5 stars (my rule for buying) or they are on my top 20 movie faves of all time list.

Some surprises might be: (these would all be five star flicks for me)
Tortilla Soup, Waking Ned Devine, Snatch, The Muppet Movie, The Princess & The Warrior (go rent this right now), Jacob's Ladder, The Ice Storm, The Sweet Hereafter, Halloween, The Dark Crystal, Cowboy Bebop The Movie, and A. I.

10. Name an actor that launched his/her entertainment career in another medium but who has surprised you with his/her acting chops.

Yeah Eminem in 8 Mile was a mind blower. Just awesome... also a big fan of Marky Mark on the big screen

11. Have you ever seen a movie in a drive-in? If so, what?

First movie ever was at the Drive in in Southington, CT in 1972, I was 3 years old, my brother was 1: Silent Running

There's a drive in about 45 minutes from our house now, it's in upstate NY, and in the past few years we've seen: Shrek II, 40 year old virgin, the punisher (omg BAD), and that Jack Black movie where they invent "poo begone" or whatever it was... Va-poo-rize that's it -- Envy.

12. Ever made out in a movie?

Yes, I made out in a movie once--once! "Keri" (freshman year) just wanted to smooch and kiss, kiss and smooch, and I kept trying (to not much avail) to watch David Lynch's Dune out of the corner of my eye. That relationship about a week... and haven't made out in a movie since.

13. Name a movie that you keep meaning to see but just haven't yet gotten around to it.

The ones that have been on my Netflix cue the longest and still show no signs of moving up in the cue any time soon thanks to hardcore drugs like House MD and Rome filling up the first like 18 slots... ugh (I love me some widescreen, advertisement-less serialized TV drama)
Amores Perros, Bloody Sunday, Thelma and Louise, The Devil's Backbone, Monster, Central Station, The Deer Hunter, Born Into Brothels, Brokeback Mountain, Goodnight and Goodluck, Marie Antionette, Nacho Libre, Pick of Destiny

14. Ever walked out of a movie?

The first one was Local Hero (wanted James Bond that night I think), then Down and Out in Beverly Hills, and surprised myself by walking out of The Beat That My Heart Skipped - cuz everyone said it was so good... it was just the third act that my wife and I had to skip.

15. Name a movie that made you cry in the theater.

@Annie: I cry all the time.

I'll freely admit, I'm with you. I GO to movies because I love that they make me feel things. Happy, sad, angry, thrilled... it's a "a ride" for me.

The first movie I ever cried just full on during was when I was about 11 or 12 was David Lynch's The Elephant Man. Then I remember, my friend who I was with started crying when E.T. was dying, and seeing him start the waterworks I guess freed me to me "uncool" and I let 'em fly... there have been countless others. Once in a while I cry just because of how flawless the set up in the first act is, or something so amazing in the filmmaking (usually only happens if there was dinner and wine beforehand)... but mostly it's the heartbreaking stuff. Some of the past few years would be Off The Map, Walk the Line, Hotel Rwanda, Finding Neverland, In America (again... with the Samantha Morton - Geeeez)

16. Popcorn?

I like popcorn, but it's not essential. when I do - butter on top and in the middle, and tons of movie salt. (My movie staples are Twizzlers or Gummi Bears and Cherry Coke if they have it.)

17. How often do you go to the movies (as opposed to renting them or watching them at home)?

Try to see every movie that comes to our local independent (Images Cinema, Williamstown, MA, w00t!) they show something new every week - and we go to the multimegaplexoramamat about once or twice a month.

18. What's the last movie you saw in the theater?

Zodiac - quite liked it.

19. What's your favorite/preferred genre of movie?

I guess my fave is Sci Fi - but it's a genre fraught with disappointment, so I'd have to say Drama or Suspence/Drama (a good character piece with some unexpected twists... like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - what genre is that?)

I love horror, again - fraught with poo as a genre in general (Session9, The Shining are some exceptions), and comedy... actually, I don't like this question.... I love movies so much it's tough to narrow... Genre I don't like: Formulaic Drivel

20. What's the first movie you remember seeing in the theater?

I remember seeing "No Deposit, No Return" (it was a Don Knotts thing) with my grandfather. Also, I *fully* remember being in the "Cine I" at the West Farms Mall in West Hartford, CT in 1977 to watch "For the Love of Benji" with my bro and my grandparents and before the movie, there was a trailer for Star Wars, which was playing in "Cine II" and I still haven't been able to pick my jaw up from my lap. I was 7, and my jaw's been hanging ever since. My brother and I were both leaning over toward Gramma and Grandpa going "we wanna se THAT ONE!!" and I remember my Grandfather saying "no! not for you guys, too crazy and violent! you watch Benji here, now boys" The following weekend, my Dad (my grandfather's son) took the bro and I to see Star Wars and the first thing I did when we saw my grandfather the next time was totally give it to him about how Dad took us to see that movie he said was too violent and how it was the best movie in the whole wide world. It changed my life. Err... come to think of it, I wonder if I should haven listened to Grampa? 8-\

21. What movie do you wish you had never seen?

@Annie "Probably I Spit On Your Grave." I was warned, and have read about it, so I am glad to know I can still keep skipping it

For me... Trainspotting as a first date movie. Just not a good idea.

22. What is the weirdest movie you enjoyed?

Define "weird movie".... What about "American Movie" that was weird as hell, and wonderful - so was "Blair Witch" and "Barton Fink" - but I guess the weirdest movie (seen as such by most normal people) that I love is "Twin Peaks Fire Walk With Me."

23. What is the scariest movie you've seen?

Session 9 by Brad "the machinist & next stop wonderland" Anderson... omg, what a PHENOMENAL picture.

24. What is the funniest movie you've seen?

Raising Arizona had me in such pain from laughing, it has to take the cake. I saw it on VHS in 1991 at my friend Jeff's house in California, and we DIED laughing. Such an amazing script with career topping performances. A study on how to walk the line between absurd and character drama. Pitch perfect, A+ comedy.

Comments

As much as I wanted to love

As much as I wanted to love Session 9, it was literally ruined for me by a single moment: after everyone has pretty much decided that they hate David Caruso, there's a scene where he's standing in the stairs and points at Gordon and says "No, F*ck youuuuuu!" It's one of the worst line readings I've ever heard. I still can't watch that scene without laughing uproariously.

But thank you for loving Fight Club. It's one of those rare movies that reinvigorated my love of filmmaking and I'm kind of sick of defending it to so many people.

The points of convergence

The points of convergence are terrifying. I really thought I was the only one re: BSG...

I agree re: Marky Mark.

Secret of NIMH! That movie is about me, Mrs. Frisbie, though I lost my brood of mouse-children when we moved to our new apartment.

In America had me crying like a baby, too--I love a good melodrama.

However--
You'll never make me see Amelie--I hate French movies that are about/starring cute French girls. Sorry.

@Geoff - see the cool thing

@Geoff - see the cool thing for me is I haven't really been a regular watcher of TV - and had never seen Caruso in his Miami show. I think I saw him as a commando pal of Dave Morse in that "Proof of Life" flick (which surprisingly I quite liked) and he was "fine" there, so in session 9, I had no baggage on the man going in... he was good in it, I remember thinking he was good casting - don't remember the offending line you mentioned, I think in context, with again, no baggage, I think it hit home as at least a decent line reading... hehe, "out of context trailer moments that suuuuuck".... that should be a new top 10 list... one would be Keanu Reeves in Speed (is it?) going "give me your haaaaand!" (pronounced in Keanuese like "bond") - oh and yeah, the only people I've run into who "hate" fight club, are people who haven't seen it. (I'm sure someone will say they saw it and hated it now, but there you go. It's a masterpiece.)

@Buzz - unfortunately I'd never allow my dulcet Garlandian impression to leave the room into which it was sung :) I'll check out the site though, for sure.

@Annie but.. but... but...! damn. Fine, more Amélie for me then.
