Have you been to Apple's website yet today? They have officially announced the arrival of the long-awaited 8-core 3GHz Mac Pro.
They have added the new machine to the top of the line, keeping the current quads where they were:
The Apple Mac Pro Product Line - April 4, 2007
• Two 2.0GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon ("Woodcrest") at $2,200
• Two 2.66GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon at $2,499
• Two 3.0GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon at $3,298
And finally the chart-topper:
• Two 3.0GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon ("Clovertown") will run you $3,997
All prices are for machines in their base configurations.
Additionally, the displays have dropped in price, they've knocked $200 off the 30" so it's not $1,799, which is just amazing... didn't that thing start out at like $3,900? Maybe it was $3,499. Regardless, $1,799 for that screen is sick.
longofest at Mac Rumors wrote: "Interestingly, at the current time the model is only available in the US and Canada, although this may simply reflect a lag time in Apple updating localized versions of Apple's website." I have yet to be able to confirm this one way or the other, but I suspect he's right, in that the web sites for countries other than US and Canada have yet to be updated. I'll check into that and if there's anything odd going on for you guys outside of North America, I'll be sure to let you know.
In the mean time, start savin' those pennies! My full-blown system that I just configured on the store is going to run me $9,758. What did I configure?

Rofl! I can't wait to try
April 4, 2007 - 3:47pm — Todd Howard (not verified)Rofl!
I can't wait to try encoding with this bad boy. And seeing the extent to which "real time effects" in Final Cut Pro just crank out like they're nothing. I have a feeling I'm going to be double-plus amazed. It's said to be 2x faster than the 3GHz Quad Power Mac G4 across the board. Yum.
Not to mention what it'll be like to play WoW at 80 fps on a 30" W00t! Back to saving pennies!
Yeah, even on my G5 with 3.5
April 4, 2007 - 4:43pm — Geoff (not verified)Yeah, even on my G5 with 3.5 gigs of RAM, video encoding is still a blackhole, time-wise. Although I am interested to see how well the "turbo.264" USB encoding booster that elgato is releasing will help things.
I can't really complain, though. I was talking to my brother, a pro photo retoucher, the other day and he was telling me about the early days of PhotoShop when he would go out to a movie while waiting for a 20MB image to rotate. Yes, I said rotate.
