BODY:

Here's the thing--I loved, loved, loved 28 Weeks Later. But I have beef with the ending, and want to discuss.
I'm declaring a SPOILER ZONE after the jump--
SPOILERS!!
So I laughed at the end at the sight of the zombies running towards the Eiffel Tower, but the preceding imagery left me very confused. I can't make sense of it, within the context of the story. Here are some competing explanations:
1) Andy (the little boy) was more than just a carrier. In the helicopter, he developed the rage virus and killed his sister and Harold Perrineau. The problem with this explanation is that none of the other zombies experienced a delay in onset of symptoms. You get bit, and five seconds later you freak out. His mother, also a carrier, got bit and spent 7 months without displaying any symptoms. It doesn't make sense, within the rules created in the story.
2) Andy got to Paris safely, but then somebody got his blood in their mouth or saliva in an open wound and another outbreak occurred, just like with his mother. The problem here is that it doesn't explain why Fresnadillo opens the sequence with imagery of Harold Perrineau's helicopter in ruins. That's visual language that implies that the helicopter was involved in the initial French outbreak, but that further implies the illogical #1.
3) So that must mean that the outbreak occurred via #2, and Perrineau was brought down in his capacity as US Army, now protecting France. His death had nothing to do with Andy at all; he was just a random casualty. The problem with this is that we saw Perrineau defy the Code Red orders by rescuing the children and leaving England. Why would the US Army let him remain on active duty? The US hasn't been hit by the rage virus, so there's no shortage of soldiers to send over (yet).
4) I'm left with this story solution: Some rage virus zombies crossed the Chunnel into France and got there just when Harold Perrineau was touching down. It's the only thing that makes sense, but I'm still not satisfied.
What do you think?

Andy's sister did not express the same eye trait as him and his mother, which means she probably didn't have the same type of genetic immunity. While in the helicopter, they could have kissed causing her to become a zombie.
