The RED Diary, Day Six

Editor's Note: The following is part of a two-week series of guest entries authored by Mark Pederson, Owner and Executive Producer of Offhollywood Studios, about his experiences with the very first two RED cameras to hit the public market. The RED is a boundary breaking technology that offers unparalleled HD imagery in digital format at a price point 1/10th that of similarly equipped cameras.

This post is going to be a bit short. It's Wednesday, 10:45am. I have a presentation at 11:00. Two more back to back after that, and tomorrow I will present the RED camera and work flow to NHL. Hockey in 4K! I forgot to mention in my post yesterday about various client types - SPORTS is another market ripe for 4K RED. Wanna see those athletes sweat?

I am trying so hard to keep up with everything that is happening since these cameras became REAL and in our procession. Things are changing. It was bound to happen.

Ted Schilowitz, the Red Team's Leader of the Rebellion, whom I knew from AJA, once told me to read The Tipping Point. That's what the RED camera is. This IS the tipping point of digital cinema. Anyone that doesn't believe this, simply has not seen what I have seen.

I am sure that many of you think I work for RED because I am rather ENTHUSIASTIC about this camera. I don't. I am a PAYING CUSTOMER. Technically, as far as I know, Offhollywood is the FIRST public paying customer of RED Digital Cinema Camera Company. We are an early adopter. Many are waiting. They want to see it is real. They want to wait for all the features of the camera to be enabled. Meanwhile, the reservation list grows EVERY DAY.

And think about this - Red is just getting started. They have publicly announced that they are in active development on a tiny, palm sized camcorder. 4K projectors and 4K monitors. All with DISRUPTIVE PRICE POINTS.

Change is good. Hollywood knew it would come, sooner or later. Now that change is here. These are interesting times indeed...

Stay tuned ... I will try my best to write a longer, more informative post for tomorrow.

- Mark Pederson
