A Concert Venue Grows In Brooklyn

This past Friday, I ventured to Williamsburg, Brooklyn to The Glass Door for a concert featuring Caspian, Beware of Safety, Down to a Sunless Sea, The American $, and Hadoken.

You might be thinking, why is this design blogger writing about music - who does she think she is?! But, my focus here is not on the incredible, awesome, mindblowing music I heard, but on the venue itself, which is totally unexpected and just the right amount of hip.

The Glass Door is basically hidden from sight - if it weren't for the slew of hipsters waiting in line to get in, I probably would have missed it entirely. Once you find it, the adventure begins. The venue is actually a girl's apartment (she also bartends, books the bands, and is responsible for updating concertgoers on who is playing and when), which creates the atmosphere of just sitting around with a group of your buddies and listening to some sweet jams.

There is no actual stage, just an area set aside for the bands to play - this ensures that you are totally absorbed in the rhythm and vibe as the musicians rock out. My favorite part of this venue is that the walls are covered in drawings, tags, and cartoons by anyone who feels like putting something up. Here are two that I especially like:

The red skull is post-halloween perfect, and the orange cowboy just kept catching my eye - forgive the picture quality, my phone's camera suffers from being dropped, constantly.

Down the hall from the concert space is a quaint living-room-type area with a comfy couch, a table for purchasing band merchandise and rooms for the bands' equiptment.

Overall, I would say that being at The Glass Door was one of my favorite concert experiences to date. The intimacy, the quality of the rock and the design of the space was totally unique.

If you like great music, an intimate atmosphere and aren't afraid of passionate hipsters, you will love The Glass Door. For upcoming concert info click here.
