Experimenting With Bad Decisions

Okay, so by now it's no secret that Paranormal Activity was the surprise horror hit of 2009. The suspense, the subtlety, the painfully drawn-out episodic nature of it all. But while audiences were blissfully soaking in each second of their Paranormal experience, little did they know that a wide-eyed, wily producer was watching them the entire time.

David Jackson, president of Showcase Entertainment, has already expressed his enthusiasm for their upcoming film, Experimental Activity, starring PA lead, Katie Featherston. As Jackson put it to Variety reporters, "Clearly having the fastest-rising star in the business is a feather in the cap, but we feel the film stands on its own as a cool psychological thriller."

That could very well be the case, except for the fact that now everyone will doubt it until they see the movie for themselves (read: if they see the movie for themselves). Considering the film's original title, Walking Distance, was quickly abandoned after the nationwide success of Paranormal Activity, and replaced with a title that misleadingly screams "SEQUEL," Jackson's remarks don't exactly resonate as credible.

Despite the uncanny resemblance of the titles, Experimental Activity is anything but a supernatural horror. On the contrary, it focuses on a picture-perfect town where, on the surface, everything and everyone seems content, copacetic, and conveniently close by (hence the original title). But instead of evil demons, it's the big bad evil government that comes to play—a little more "down to earth" if you ask me, not to mention completely unrelated. But oh well, who's judging.

May the best activity win.
