It seems as though Michael Bay and his steadfast production team, Platinum Dunes, just aren't giving up on the Ouija. After partnering with Hasbro last year in a deal to adapt the popular board game into a supernatural action-thriller film, skeptics immediately doubted the film's potential by referencing a couple of indisputable truths: the recent board game-into-movie fad has proven unsuccessful thus far, not to mention an action-adventure film based on a similar premise--Jumanji, anyone?--has already been done. (Okay, so this one will have CG ghosts instead of rabid jungle creatures but from an altrusitic standpoint, aren't they all the same)?
Bay recently nixed Elf screenwriter, David Berenbaum, for the project and hired Lost and Tron Legacy writers Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz in his place. Andrew Form and Brad Fuller are signed on as co-producers, bringing their thriller-film experience from the remakes of Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street with them.
While the superstitious rules attached to the game will apparently serve as the movie's outline, one has to wonder just how far out of the box Kitsis and Horowitz are planning to go with this one. Will they touch upon the history of the Ouija board, adding some truth and psychological aspects to the film to hopefully make it interesting? Or will another awkward white boy just get sucked inside the game by a feisty, red-eyed demon.
Regardless of the approach they take, there's no doubting that with Bay's powerhouse team behind the film, Ouija will most likely include a slew of the most expensive special effects to date as well as a cast of attractive young actors who will probably make moving a planchette around a wooden slab look sexual.
With the recent widespread success of Paranormal Activity, it's already been proven that Ouija boards can be scary on screen. However, what has not been proven yet is whether or not they can provide the basis for a multi-million dollar movie where serious suspension of disbelief is key. Too bad this time we won't have a comic book series to use as a point of reference.
