3D films have been around for a long time. However, experiences have been fairly limiting, technologically and creatively. Older 3D titles lacked basic camera and film-making techniques which hindered the overall desirability of the film. But, as in all technological endeavors, 3D technology has been growing at a rapid pace. One company pushing the bounds and creating enhanced experiences is 3ality Digital. Based in Burbank, California, the studio's latest title is U2 3D, which premiered at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival.
U2 3D is a live-action 3D concert movie. The film follows U2 across 7 cities in South America and combines various performances into a single produced film - U2 3D. Produced using 3D imaging and 5.1 surround sound technology, the film is the first of its kind. While it does require 3D glasses, the experience is immersive and breathtaking. Almost everything in the film, including opening credits and end credits are produced and displayed in 3D. The concert itself is spectacularly projected and the film's vibrant colors make it come alive. Utilizing multiple cameras and unique angles, the film not only gives a complete view of the stage and the band, but also displays the vivid reactions of the audience.
Despite numerous accomplishments, U2 3D is not perfect. On a handful of close-up scenes, the shots do appear very soft and layered, which is bound to make any viewer dizzy. While these scenes aren't numerous, it clearly indicates some of the short-comings of the technology.
Fortunately, technology keeps progressing and this minor, yet important short-coming is bound to be corrected in future productions. Overall, the film is very well produced, with excellent image quality and a surround sound experience like none other.
