The Cutting Room: Week of August 25th, 2008

A weekly roundup of buzzworthy tips, tricks, and topics from the Final Cut Studio community:

-Videopier has solved the missing link between MPEG2 camcorders and your Mac. It lets you visualize the clips on your camera that Quicktime would otherwise refuse to open. VideoPier lets you copy them to disk, and export them to any format for viewing (iPod, AppleTV, iPhone) or editing (iMovie 06/08).

-FCP User Groups and Digital filmmakers from Los Angeles, Boston, Mexico, Italy, Germany, UK and from around the world will be heading to Amsterdam, The Netherlands for the First Annual IBC FCPUG SuperMeet to be held on Sunday, 14 September 2008 at the Gashouder on the grounds of the beautiful Culture Park Westergasfabriek as part of IBC. Guests will include Darius Fisher, editor and FX wizard who edited and co-produced award-winning documentary, Fuel, and Billy Fox, editor of the upcoming Traitor, who will talk about how Final Cut Studio helped bring the thriller to life.

-Digitalfilms, a blog by Oliver Peters, offers Ten Tips For a Better Final Cut Pro Experience, a fairly detailed list geared towards experience editors who are making the transition to Final Cut Pro from other editing systems.

-How many of you are professional editors? I'm going to assume not everybody is raising their hands, and further, I'm going to assume some of those not raising their hands will gladly accept any help they can get. Well, HDFilmtools.com is here to help you out and you can begin by taking a look at their tutorial on the Overlap Cut.
