Low Anthem @ The Bowery Ballroom 06/15/09

Low Anthem's repertoire consists mainly of an introspective dance with religion and existentialism (leaning toward agnostic) at the pace of a country waltz.  However, just when you thought you were going drink your beer and then fill it back up with tears, the band will crank it up to full-blown drunk-off-whiskey-and-smashing-things mode.  Although these songs are few and far between- they probably only played two or three all night- it was enough to balance the energy and keep you on your toes. 

Their set started off with Ben Knox Miller offering some leftover dumplings to the crowd, which were quickly consumed by the apparently malnourished patrons.  From there on it was just music with pauses for the band to situate themselves in front of the dozens of instruments scattered around the stage.  It isn't even worth mentioning all the tools at their disposal, but to give you an idea, the stage looked like Brooklyn swap meet.  The three are capable with any of the instruments in their hands, most notably is Jeff Prystowski who is a virtuoso on the stand up bass.

Opening acts Corey Chisel and Anais Mitchell along with some other friends joined Low Anthem for the final song of the night, "Charlie Darwin."  It was a brilliant rendition and a fitting end to what was an incredible night of music.  All three acts have loads of talent and are worth checking out.  I was pleasantly surprised by the experience, and will keep an eye out for their next shows in the area.
