A few months ago, I had the surprising pleasure to edit a Rehearsal Space episode featuring 2001's biggest party animal, Andrew WK. Unfortunately one of the things that hit the cutting room floor was an interesting tale about what the former party-metal god turned motivational speaker has been up to musically lately.
As it turns out, your friend Andrew WK is still making music, and party music at that, but in a very different way. In 2008, Andrew teamed up with dub reggae legend and former Bob Marley producer, Lee "Scratch" Perry to produce the 72 year old's 54th studio album, Repentance. And they must have done one hell of a job too, because the Narnack Records release was put up for a 2008 Best Reggae Album Grammy!
While WK touted being able to psychically implant ideas into Perry's head, the highly influential, and often highly decorated "Scratch" must have had some tricks up his sleeve as well, bringing on guest artists such as Moby, Don Fleming (producer for Sonic Youth and The Posies), Brian Chippendale (Lightning Bolt), and adult film star turned artist, Sasha Grey.
This sonic mishmash goes up against offerings from modern pop reggae stalwarts Shaggy and Elephant Man as well as albums from Burning Spear, Heavy D, and Sly and Robbie. But win or loose, one thing is for sure, these "Scratch" and WK have bridged a gap that spans genre and generations to once again bring the party.
