Idolator's New Editors Alienate Core Readership, Think Keane is Cool

The music blog Idolator, a one-time Gawker Media affiliate that was recently acquired by the ultra-heinous (but also ultra-well-financed) Buzznet, has new editors.

Maura Johnston, the last of the site's founding editors, is out, and Becky Bain and Robbie Daw, of E! and Towleroad, respectively, are in.

The site's regular readers are not happy.

After Johnston, who guided the site for over three years, posted a quick, modest goodbye on Monday evening, the site barely missed a beat, with posts rolling in the following day about Lady GaGa, Britney Spears, Amerie, and, um, more Lady GaGa.

The one difference? Aside from a post detailing the underwhelming sales of Amerie's new record, there was a noticeable lack of insight running through the posts by Bain and Daw, who didn't bother to introduce themselves until Wednesday. Some posts looked like little more than advertisements, and the site's loyal commenters, who comprise a significant part of Idolator's charm, sniffed it out.

It's a little unclear what plans Idolator's evil overlord, Buzznet, has for the site. But thanks to some magnificent digging by the good folks over at The Daily Swarm, it's beginning to look like business-savvy, open-minded pop music analysis will not figure prominently, if at all:

Daw is a hack who writes for a gay men's blog called Towleroad and maintains an indescribably MOR music blog called Chart Rigger. He also thinks Keane and Snow Patrol constitute "great 'indie-pop' discoveries."

Bain, who commenters have already begun savaging for her would-be folksy dropping of 'g's, used to work for E!, supposedly has the comedic chops to work for the Upright Citizens Brigade (her posts certainly hide these gifts well), and likes to take Ecstasy on the first date.

We of course wish them every success in turning Idolator into the cash cow that Buzznet seems to think it can become.
