Back To Basics: Stop-Motion Photoshop and the Questions It Raises

Via Adobe's John Nack comes this awesome stop-motion Photoshop video, made by 15-year-old Josh Sunshine and his dad.

Lately, I've noticed more than a smattering of these tangible, self-referential representations of software, virtual technologies, and computer-related concepts in general. Is this an attempt to get back to basics, back to a kind of tactile approach to the world? Is it our way to grapple with technology that is stunning in its capabilities, undoubtedly even to some of those who create it? Am I reading too much into it? Your thoughts?
