Painting with Light — A Very Different Form of Photography

This blog was contributed by Sara Felsenstein,  ZIO Editorial Assistant.

Light painting photography is a technique that requires a light source in a dark location, a low shutter speed, and very long exposure times. The result: subjects take on an ethereal nature, hovering in a time where even light seems to move slowly.

Dean Chamberlain is a renowned light painter whose abstract, almost eerie work has been featured in galleries around the world. Photographers like Chamberlain literally blur the lines between photography and painting, between the real and the surreal. Below, you can see that the lighting and textures of a Chamberlain portrait are reminiscent of those in a painting by surrealist Salvador Dali.
