Editor’s Note: Designing Minds is on a short break in preparation for the launch season two featuring all new episodes showcasing design in everyday life. This episode of Designing Minds is a special syndication from the Zoom in Online Design Channel video archive.
Design Matters Live is an on-going series based on the Adobe/AIGA live version of Debbie Millman’s highly acclaimed and much listened to internet radio show, Design Matters.
In this first episode, Debbie talks to the multimedia artist, Elliot Earls, about his experimental non-linear digital videos, spoken word poetry, music, typography and the inspirational leap he made from commercial graphic artist to teacher, mentor and self-made artist. Elliot Earls is an Artist-In-Residence at Cranbrook Academy of Art and “capo” of The Apollo Program. The Apollo Program’s commercial clients include Elektra Entertainment, Nonesuch Records, Scribner Publishing C., Elemond Casabella (Itlay), The Cartoon Network (U.K.), Imaginary Forces, Polygram Classics and Jazz, The Voyager Company and Janus Films. His commercial work includes two television commercials for the Cartoon Network in the United Kingdom as well as an interactive documentary on the work of Frank Gehry for Casabella in Italy. As a typographer, his original type design is distributed worldwide by Emigre Inc. As a performance artist, Earls was awarded an Emerging Artist grant by Manhattan's prestigous Wooster Group. Elliot’s latest body of work is the feature length film, Sarany Motel featuring music by Elliot and the Venomous Sons of Jonah.
