This special episode of Designing Minds, part of the Art Directors Club Young Guns series, features presentations from two New York City based designers, Chris Rubino and James Victore.

Rubino is a young, individualistic and principled designer whose work has been commissioned by an impressive list of national clients including Guinness, ESPN, Miramax, Condé Nast and the Banana Republic. Victore is a design establishment whose passionate and message-infused work has won an array of national and international awards and is permanently archived in the Library of Congress.

The two discuss what remaining true to themselves means, both in client initiated and self-inspired projects, and how to learn the trade so it becomes a fulfilling lifelong career, not a means to a paycheck. Their stories of bootstrap budgets, self-exploration and visionary design are inspiration to aspiring artists everywhere.

This episode of On the Circuit brings into focus the joy and woe of independent film production. Zoom in Online's Keith Uhlich caught up with guerrilla filmmaker, Preston Miller. Miller is the writer and director of Jones, a low budget project of love.

Jones tells a sexually charged story of a southern businessman enjoying the fruits of big city life. Keith's conversation with Preston touches on his refusal to compromise his work for commercially expedient purposes, the importance of character development and the wild ride of shoestring production budgets.

In this video Technology Today segment we introduce up and coming film composer, James Schafer. James was the grand prize winner of the Turner Classic Movies (TCM) Young Film Composers Competition this year. James’ entry was selected from over 900 submissions to win a $15,000 cash prize, a Mac Pro audio production workstation and the opportunity to score the 1924 silent film Beau Brummel which will premiere on the TCM network.

James offers a tour of his home studio about an hour outside of Los Angeles. He talks about his experience of the competition, and the new challenges ahead of him both technologically and creatively. He shows off his production rig (newly decked out, courtesy of Apple), and explains his workflow from home studio, to his various collaborators and finally to a recording stage.
