On the Circuit: Anders Ostergaard (Burma VJ)

A video camera may only be a box of plastic filled with wires, chips, and lenses, but it’s capable of something so much more powerful than the sum of its parts. The documentary Burma VJ is a testament to just how powerful information can be. Totally suppressed by the Burmese government, journalists in Burma have gone underground to risk imprisonment and their lives to record the government’s cruelty and smuggle the footage out of the country.

Together with Joshua, a member of these underground journalists who has to keep his identity a secret, filmmaker Anders Ostergaard celebrates the bravery and commitment of the DVB – the Democratic Voice of Burma – and their dedication in the face of seemingly impossible odds.

In this episode of On the Circuit, Zoom In Online's Jim Rohner spoke with Anders and Joshua at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival where Burma VJ premiered. Anders and Joshua share their thoughts on the necessity of their work, the inspiration drawn from the Burmese journalists, and holding onto hope when all seems lost.
