On the Circuit: Bill Plympton (Hot Dog)

When it comes to the animation of Bill Plympton, there are many words to describe it: warped, unique, dark, funny, but above all else, original.  Plympton has been his own master for decades, writing and drawing anything that strikes his fancy.  This tactic has been wildly successful for the New York-based animator as his features and shorts have been overwhelmingly critically acclaimed.  His latest short film, Hot Dog, is the third installment in a trilogy that began with 2004’s Oscar-nominated Guard Dog and finds the loveable pooch trying desperately and failing miserably at being a firefighter.  Known for trying to recapture the animation medium for adults, Plympton manages to cram plenty of gallows humor into the 5:50 long short, which can be seen at this year’s Animation Spotlight at the Sundance Film Festival.
