This year’s Oscar shortlist for Best Documentary Feature seems to confirm that last year’s win for Taxi to the Dark Side is ushering in a pattern of bleak socially conscious films. However, similar to James Marsh’s Man on Wire, Gini Reticker’s Pray the Devil Back to Hell is an uplifting, life-affirming film that focuses on the unifying effect of hope and the revolutions that can spring from it. By the time of the film’s premiere, Liberia had already been experience its longest period of peace in decades, thanks to the combined efforts of women from all over the country who were sick and tired of living with war, murder, and rape. Pray the Devil Back to Hell is an eye-opening film, a testament to the power of the human spirit, and a message to the oppressed and hopeless all over the world.
