The United States Constitution guarantees in its First Amendment that “Congress shall make no law . . . prohibiting the exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech.” Filmmaker Liz Garbus would argue this guarantee has been broken.
Her film, Shouting Fire: Stories From the Edge of Free Speech insists that freedom of speech has been suppressed in the United States for a long time and cites three well-publicized examples of people who have been persecuted for exercising the rights the Consitution is supposed to unconditionally guarantee.
