Gomorra is a Mafia movie unlike any Mafia movie you’ve ever seen before. Based on the tell-all book by Roberto Saviano, Gomorra is a multi-protagonist film following five separate storylines of people trying to survive, prosper, and escape the real-life Camorra mob in Naples, Italy. Camorra’s influence is very real and very dangerous (Saviano is currently under protective custody because of his book), but director Matteo Garrone does not use the film to judge any of the characters involved – guilty or not. Instead, Garrone uses the film as an expose, a revealing and exploratory look at a world that some people cannot escape.
Gomorra opens this weekend in limited release.
