North Korea has been known as a secluded country for decades. Even before Kim Jong-il came to power, his father Kim il-sung ensured that North Korea and its “President for Life” remained mysterious figures in the public eye. According to N.C. Heikin’s Kimjongilia, that mystery cloaks years of torture, oppression, executions, and brainwashing, all of which are employed to keep North Koreans in line through fear and to support the claim that their leader is a god worthy of their praise. Though faced with death for speaking out, refugees who have escaped the country speak out publicly for the first time in this documentary, giving a voice to the countless people who have suffered under the oppression of a regime that doesn’t want the truth revealed.
