On the Circuit: Peter Callahan (Against the Current)

Everyone deals with tragedy differently.  Those who have experienced it and those who are just spectators to it often view life through totally different spectrums.  They don’t necessarily have to understand each other, but they need to respect and appreciate each other.  Against the Current, playing in the Spectrum series at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival, is an exploration of how people deal with tragedy and the repercussions and ripple effects that their decisions have on others around them.  Starring Joseph Fiennes as a widower who decides to swim the length of the Hudson River in time for the 5th anniversary of a personal tragedy, the film is filled with dramatic meditations on loss and love, but also manages to inspire with beautiful cinematography and surprise with unexpected moments of gallows humor and self-deprecating banter.
