On the Circuit: Roberta Grossman (Blessed is the Match)

For a brief time, Roberta Grossman’s Blessed is the Match seemed poised for glamour after appearing the Oscar shortlist for Best Documentary Feature. Though January 22nd came and went without a final five nomination, that brief whiff of spotlight opened doors and brought about well-deserved attention for the documentary about an overlooked yet significant piece of history from World War II. Based on the diary entries of Jew Hannah Senesh, the film tells the story of an attempted rescue mission never seen before and never seen since, as 37 soldiers, including Hannah, parachuted into Yugoslavia with the intention of rescuing Hungarian Jews destined for Auschwitz. That the mission failed does not mean Hannah’s example has failed to inspire, with Blessed is the Match the hopeful first step in highlight the inspirational story for the world.
