In guerilla-style protests over the economy, Living Things burned dollar bills at the South by Southwest (SXSW) confab in Austin, Texas this past weekend, both on the streets and in concerts.
The rock band stormed the stage at Perez Hilton's "One Night in Austin" concert on Saturday night during a performance by Thunderheist. Living Things was accompanied by six homeless men (including a wounded war veteran) from Austin's Front Steps Shelter and all proceeded to burn dollar bills to protest "Wall Street's dirty ways".
Living Things also included the dollar-burning in its' own three scheduled performances, accompanied by the homeless men.
Instructions on how to join in the protest post-SXSW were posted by the band on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BjUyg1srxEI
The posting informs: "Our mother is a bank manager at Bank of America. Our father is a small business owner. We believe in the American Dream. But the dream is broken. You and I have something in common, we want the good life. But there is a problem. Wall Street's dollar is dirty. Let's burn that dirty dollar. We are not economists. We don't have a solution. But through symbolism we can raise awareness together."
The band offers a free download of "Mercedes Marxist" from their latest album, HABEAS CORPUS, at www.ultragrrrl.com and invite others to post their own "Burn the Mercedes Marxist" videos on YouTube using the song as a soundtrack.
Living Things is also purported to be organizing a march on Wall Street on "tax day", April 15, starting with a free concert at 80 Nassau St. in Manhattan.
Living Things is a rock band from St. Louis, MO comprised of three brothers, Lillian, Eve and Bosh Berlin, with a childhood friend, Cory Becker. Lillian, lead agitator and vocalist, is the husband of acclaimed music video director Floria Sigismondi who is currently directing the new film "The Runaways" with Kristen Stewart.
