Filmmaker Guy Maddin will admit that not even he’s sure where the bounds of reality and fantasy blur in his latest film, My Winnipeg. He’ll also admit that those bounds don’t really concern him. Concocted from a surreal blend of archival documentary footage and narrative re-dramatizations held together by a fictitious exploratory thread, My Winnipeg is an engrossing pastiche of Maddin’s musings on the Canadian city that bred him. Zoom In’s Jim Rohner sat down Maddin for insight into the agglomeration of pop-culture and societal influences responsible for shaping who he is and the process of making sense of it all.
