America may be on the brink of a financial meltdown. I.O.U.S.A. is a documentary film which examines the nation's current fiscal condition and explores ways to avoid an economic disaster. This interview features documentary maker Patrick Creadon. I.O.U.S.A. is his second film, a follow up to his hit debut, Wordplay, which had its World Premiere at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival and was nominated by the National Board of Review and the Broadcast Film Critic`s Association for "Best Documentary of 2006".
Before the film I.O.U.S.A. goes into wide release it would be advisable for the film maker to explore an option that was not discussed. It is something that I originally considered during the 1980's run up of the National Debt. I surmised that an individual would run for President, be taken as a serious candidate, and primarily advocate one initiative. That initiative would be to default on the National Debt. The rationale: It is the only way we can get out of this problem. It would appeal to a large amount of the electorate because taxes could be immediately cut by the percentage of the budget spent on paying the interest on the debt. By 2012 that will be well over 30%.
What about all the T-Bills and Savings Bonds that the average taxpayer holds? At 30% off on taxes all most everyone would be paid back within two years. The losers would be the large investors, mostly foreign, and the very wealthy, that hold the debt. These groups have other investments and would still have tons of money.
What about the ability of the government to borrow money? That would mean a balanced budget because no one would lend money to a defaulter. The investment money usually allocated to government debt would then go to private projects. That would benefit the economy, taxpayers and, increase revenue. Debt instruments could still be offered. Then default on them every few years and hit the suckers.
There will be many winners. Most of them will be voters. Is this a rationale idea? It may or may not be. It does not matter.
What is important is if someone thinks that they can sell it to enough voters to become President.
The long term prophetic nature of I.O.U.S.A. will be diminished if this prediction comes to pass. The film will enhance its position if it addresses this possibility. Dire consequences are forecast as a result of the debt. Is it too far fetched to envision the above scenario? Greed got us into this debt. Greed will be appealed to, by some, to get us out of it.
