There are tons of great Twitter-related articles and apps out there to learn about connecting with people in your professional community. One great way to quickly find people who are talking about a particular topic of interest is to use the Twitter search function. I typed in "photojournalism" to get the latest on new projects and people I hadn't yet heard of within the community.
There are lots of photography portfolio hosting sites out there. Here are three of Zoom In's favorites to help you navigate the sometimes labyrinthian path that is online networking. In addition to your Flickr account, it's important to have a few other spots around the web to show off your portfolios. In addition to introducing more people to your work, this will show potential employers that you know your way around the ever-expanding online piece of the photo industry.
The first non-human photographer was probably one M. Arthur Batut’s kite, which was equipped with a slow-burning fuse contraption that told the kite when it was high enough to snap a photo. The kite took its first photo in Labruguiere, France in 1888.
